Music Lang

International and Multidisciplinary Research Project

The main objective of this project is the creation of a multimodal resource with musical support that favours the good development of the reading process of adult foreign language learners. To this end, components such as reading fluency, working memory, processing speed, verbal comprehension and musical aptitude are studied in order to define the reading profile of these students and the educational needs to be covered. Since the learning of a language is also based on the teaching of its culture, the multimodal resource to be designed is also based on data from multimodal analysis. It requires a selection of sound texts (music video clips) for learners of Spanish, English and French as a foreign language, which seek to develop "intercultural literacy", a cohesion of European citizenship. The analysis of the images and music, as well as the linguistic content, allows for the selection of those which promote intercultural values between the mother tongue and the target language of adult learners of Spanish, English and French as a foreign language and which may have an impact on their European intercultural identity. The musical input could also achieve the emotional well-being of foreign language learners and broaden their multicultural horizon through thematically tuned listening in accordance with the educational texts.

We are an international and multidisciplinary team (applied linguistics, psychology, neuropsychology, musicology), working with Spanish, English and French as foreign languages and French, German, Spanish, Dutch and English as mother tongues. Our search for solutions to the challenge of successful adult foreign language reading development from a prosodic/musical perspective takes into account the importance of social behaviours and perceptions of science and technology, and their associated benefits and risks, insofar as such behaviours may be conducive to the necessary process of educational innovation.
